SECONDHAND SHOPPING TIPS

Secondhand shopping is a foreign thing to a lot of people, and we are here to help. It can seem intimidating, challenging, and even a little unsanitary. However, what a lot of people do not know is that it is a great way to save money, find awesome pieces for your wardrobe and secondhand is also good for the environment. It keeps unwanted clothing out of landfills and extends the life of perfectly usable items. If secondhand shopping is not something you have ever explored, make a day out of it with your friends and take it as an opportunity to get out of your comfort zone.

Triple Check Store Policies

Most secondhand stores have super strict return and or exchange policies. Keep in mind that pretty much all sales are final. It is extremely rare for a store like this to accept returns or allow exchanges even if the item is at all damaged or defective. If you do not notice any signage around the store stating the policies, ask a staff member.

Inspect Items Carefully

As we just stated, being able to return or exchange items at a secondhand store is very unlikely. This means you should pay extra attention when shopping and take the time to carefully inspect each item. Check closely for fading, tears, stains, pilling, etc. Some stores inform customers if they have tested and/or inspected the item before putting it on the sales floor. But you can never be too sure so we still advise taking a minute or two to double-check.

Keep An Eye Out For Sales

Yes, secondhand stores have sales just like regular retail stores. However, most of the time customers are notified of these sales via subscription emails so be sure to join your local secondhand stores’ email list the first time you visit so that you do not miss out on any future sales or promotions. They will also promote sales in their store, so keep an eye out for posters or signs.

Buddy System

Going shopping at thrift stores, vintage shops, etc, can be exhausting and finding anything in your size can be very time-consuming. Recruit some of your friends that love to shop as much as you do and divide and conquer. Share with each other your size and what you might be looking for. That way they can keep you in mind while they shop and vice versa. And, if there is a piece that you are on the fence about, get a friend's opinion and your decision will become much easier after their input.

Hundreds of awesome items including clothing, shoes, furniture, etc are donated to secondhand shops every single day. Do not let any preconceived notions or stereotypes keep you from at least giving it a try. You can save a ton of money and a little challenge is always fun!
