Seaweed But Make it Fashion

In our daily endeavor to bring you sustainable fashion at a deal, we wanted to highlight designers that we think push the envelope in creativity in the pursuit of sustainable fashion.  Charlotte McCurdy, a designer that describes her goal to “Counteract the narrative of climate change as a problem without a solution.” Well, she has done just that by creating a water-resistant raincoat from a plastic-like material she developed made of algae. Her innovation has garnered her recognition within the fashion design community and fostered a collaboration with Fashion designer Phillip Lim.

Algae? I know what you’re thinking, really? The answer is yes, and the results are awesome. Phillip Lim and Charlotte McCurdy took her innovation to the next level, in a successful attempt to create a petroleum-free dress comprised in bioplastic sequins. The result is a beautifully iridescent dress that appropriately is inspired by the seaweed it is in fact comprised of. The cellulose fibre that the sequins are attached to is called SeaCell and is derived from both seaweed and bamboo.

While this beautiful creation is one-of-a-kind and is seen as a “concept dress” by McCurdy. Both Lim and McCurdy see a not-so-distant future of fashion that is end-to-end sustainable. Designers will no longer be reaching for polyester when adding sequins to a design instead we are thinking seaweed.

Now that you’re excited about the potential of 100% sustainably created fashion, we want to help you reach that goal. At Deals on Designers, we are committed to thrifting and the reuse of clothing to extend the life of products and reduce waste in landfills. We will also begin to promote more brands that are created with end-to-end sustainability in mind. We all have to start somewhere, so even though we may not be able to wear seaweed today, we can reuse and thrift, while highlighting and supporting sustainable fashion.
